The Ministry of Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has called for enhanced participation during the Commonwealth Sport Africa and Europe regional forum in Mombasa.

The CS stressed the importance of greater presence and participation from all Commonwealth member countries.

He also called for increased sports participation, urging the federations to partner with the private sector in improving infrastructure, talent development and opportunities.

"Federations must partner with the private sector for better infrastructure, talent development, and increased opportunities," he said, emphasizing collaborations in funding, coaching, and research to strengthen Kenya’s global sports representation,” he said.

Murkomen urged Commonwealth Federation President Chris Jenkins, to support their ambition to host the international sporting event in the coming future while highlighting major achievements by team Kenya in previous sporting events.

‘Kenya’s participation in the Commonwealth games highlights our prowess in athletics with a growing presence in other sports. Our responsibility in this administration is to make sure that we grow all the sports in terms of diversification."

“But even with our enviable record in this competition, it’s a little bit disheartening that we have never competed before our home crowd or African soil for that matter. As the competition clocks 100 years in 2030, we should mark the anniversary with a competition in the African continent,” he said.

The two-day meeting, running from October 7-8, 2024, is set to provide the opportunity for Commonwealth Games Kenya to showcase its sporting achievements, culture, and diversity.

The meeting, attended by close to 30 countries, was an opportunity for the Commonwealth Games Association to share learnings on sport development and meaningful social impact that the Commonwealth sport movement can influence.

The meeting will also focus on the vision for a ‘reset and redefined’ looking at how the 2026 games will be an important first step in the development of a collaborative, flexible, and sustainable Commonwealth games of the future.

Commonwealth games Kenya is promoting the "Cheza Healthy" initiative, which is focusing on the importance of physical activity and promoting wellness among young Kenyans, and how the values of the programme link to sports and global events such the Commonwealth Games.
