The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested two individuals posing as Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) officers in the Bamburi area

The suspects, accompanied by uniformed police officers, were allegedly inspecting goods in shops and subsequently arresting, detaining, and extorting shop owners on claims that they were selling expired products.

According to the EACC, the suspects had duped the police officers into believing they were assisting in an official operation.

“The fraudsters were demanding amounts ranging from Sh20,000 to Sh50,000,” the EACC reported.

The suspects had been taking detained shop owners to a Police Station, where they extorted money in exchange for the release of the owners.

The scheme unraveled when the EACC mounted a counter-operation at the station, leading to the arrest of the imposters.

The two claimed to be working under an agency as consumer protection officials.

Both suspects are expected to be arraigned before the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court.

The EACC has indicated that the duo may have been involved in similar fraudulent activities in other parts of the country.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of their operations.
