    • Kanga'ta is among political heavyweights from Mount Kenya whose names have featured prominently in the list of Gachagua's possible successors as DP.

A meeting between Murang'a Governor Irungu Kang'ata on Tuesday and some MPs triggered more speculations over Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's replacement.

Kanga'ta is among political heavyweights from Mount Kenya whose names have featured prominently in the list of Gachagua's possible successors as DP.

The governor, who rose from a councillor to Kiharu MP, Murang'a senator and later governor, is seen as one of the politicians likely to succeed Gachagua.

The meeting at a Nairobi Hotel swirled speculation of a possible shift of power in the Mount Kenya region in anticipation of Gachagua's impending removal from office.

The presence of National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro at Tuesday's meeting set tongues wagging on whether or not the session had blessings from the powers that be.

The MPs remained cagey on details of their meeting with Kang'ata with Osoro telling the media that the agenda was for leaders to learn from the governor's political experience.

The high-ranking Kenya Kwanza MP lauded Kang'ata over what he termed a sterling performance in his current and past leadership roles which makes him a role model for many leaders.

"Governor Irungu Kang’ata has risen through the ranks so occasionally we usually have such kind of meetings with progressive leaders to share with us their experience with leadership,'' Osoro told the media.

He alluded to the fact that the MPs had met Kang'ata to learn about his leadership and management skills, hinting that leaders admire his credentials.

"How is it possible for one to become a councillor, then a member of parliament, a senator and then a governor, and of course he is among the best 10 performing governors we have in Kenya,'' Osoro said.

When asked why he was meeting the MPs drawn from a cross-section of parties, Kang'ata said: "When I was in parliament I created so many friends and today I just came to see my friends.''

The meeting comes at a time when there is immense lobbying within the political class ahead of the Senate's decision on Gachagua's impeachment on Thursday.

The Senate has scheduled Wednesday and Thursday to hear and determine a proposed motion for the removal of Gachagua from office.

The DP is facing 11 allegations including corruption and undermining the government.

Gachagua has denied the allegations and vowed to fight to the bitter end.

Before then, politicians are said to engage in lobbying with at least six other names having been floated.

Others who are touted as Gachagua's possible replacement include Interior CS Kithure Kindiki, Governors Anne Waiguru(Kirinyaga), Cecily Mbarire(Embu), Gladys Wanga(Homa Bay) and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Kikuyu MP and National Assembly Majority leader Kimani Ichung'wah is also under consideration.
