President William Ruto on Wednesday morning graced an event at KICC even as his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua pitched a tent metres away at the Senate Assembly for his impeachment trial.

Ruto was accompanied by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi among several others.

Also in attendance was Central Bank Governor Kamau Thugge.

Ruto has for the last two weeks avoided commenting on the impeachment debate involving his deputy.

The ongoing trial will culminate in a vote Thursday where two-thirds of the 67 members are required to remove him from office.

Gachagua’s last attempt to stop the Senate trial flopped Wednesday morning after a three-judge bench constituted by Chief Justice Martha Koome ruled that they can only exercise restraint and allow independent institutions of government to function unhindered. 

In his address during the event, Ruto commended the banking industry not only for its essential role in ensuring the efficient functioning of our economy and maintaining the integrity of our financial sector but also for leading by example in tax compliance.

He stated that the government recognises, embraces and champions the critical contributions of MSMEs, notably in creating between 80 and 90 per cent of jobs and generating nearly a third of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP
