In recognition of their stellar performance and historic qualification for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Kenya's Under-20 men's football team, the Rising Stars, were awarded Sh1.8 million.

During a breakfast event hosted by Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, the team’s achievement was celebrated, with Murkomen emphasizing the government’s commitment to nurturing young talent.

"This success highlights the Ministry’s dedication to nurturing talent, with six of the players having been groomed through the national U-13, U-15, and U-17 teams,” he stated.

He emphasized the increased financial backing for national teams, which allows players to focus solely on their performance without worrying about logistical challenges.

"Preparations for AFCON 2025 will begin immediately, including extended training camps, both locally and abroad, and friendlies with top-tier teams," Murkomen added, as Kenya looks to not only compete at AFCON but also qualify for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The team will also engage in friendly matches with top-tier opponents as they aim not just for AFCON glory but also for a spot in the U-20 FIFA World Cup.

Murkomen also highlighted the broader goals of the Ministry, including the use of technology to enhance talent identification and promote Kenyan players to international academies.

The government is in the process of rolling out 30 sports academies across the country, with a long-term goal of establishing one in each of Kenya's 290 constituencies.

"Our sights are not just set on AFCON glory but also on qualifying for the U-20 FIFA World Cup,” said Murkomen.

Kenya’s U-20 team, under the guidance of coach Salim Babu, secured their AFCON spot after a dominant 4-0 victory over Burundi in the CECAFA U-20 Championship semi-finals in Dar es Salaam.

The Sh1.8 million cash reward is part of the Ministry’s broader agenda to recognize and motivate top performers.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the players, coach, FKF, technical staff, and fans for this outstanding achievement,” Murkomen said.

With preparations for AFCON 2025 already in motion, Kenya is setting its sights on making an impact on the continental stage.
