In Summary

  • The question as to whether ODM was going to ask for a favour in return was not a question of if, but a question of what they would ask for.

ODM party asking for a favour is not only a well-deserved move, but it was expected with time.

The question as to whether ODM was going to ask for a favour in return was not a question of if, but a question of what they would ask for in return and when they would present or push for rewards after heavily and tactically coming through for President William Ruto and his allies in a unanimous vote to pass the impeachment motion at the National Assembly and the Senate.

From a political point of view, Raila and ODM scripts are very familiar.

Just like in the first assignment in which ODM and Raila Odinga joined forces with the government of Ruto and Kenya Kwanza to pacify the Gen Z movement and ensure political stability, the President offered four Cabinet slots to Raila and ODM in return for his political assistance.

Additionally, from the second assignment of impeachment, we can also deduce that pushing for more slots in government for ODM is desirable and deserved for coming through with numbers in both houses of Parliament during the impeachment motion.

Secondly, the currency in politics is not only the ability of the political party to marshal numbers but also to ensure the party whips the members to vote on a common agenda in the House when it’s critical like during the impeachment motion with none or minimal dissent.

The ODM party indeed demonstrated it can marshal numbers and rally behind the agenda sponsored by the government and deliver critical votes to pass governments agenda.

The party, having portrayed this political acumen, deserves a reward in this government.

Caution should however not be thrown to the wind, just like a proverbial camel that sought for a shelter in the tent and eventually displaced its own from the tent.

Ruto must be very careful with the limits he can go with offering positions or rewarding ODM on every political assignment.
