Standard Chartered has today announced road closures for the upcoming 21st edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, which will take place on Sunday, October 27 2024.

According to Standard Chartered, the marathon will commence at Uhuru Gardens along Lang’ata Road, with participants taking a scenic route on the Southern Bypass, offering views of the iconic Nairobi National Park.

"The 5km Family Fun Run will finish on the Southern Bypass, while all other race categories will conclude at Uhuru Gardens," Standard Chartered said.

"With more than 25,000 participants registered, the Nairobi Traffic Department has prepared a road closure schedule to ensure smooth operations and minimise disruptions."

Standard Chartered said from midnight to 1:30 pm on the day of the marathon, traffic will be redirected from the Southern Bypass to alternative routes.

These measures have been coordinated by the Nairobi Traffic Department.

Motorists driving from Karen to Kikuyu are advised to use Dagoretti Road, while those travelling from Karen to Mombasa Road via the Southern Bypass should opt for Lang’ata Road.

Drivers commuting from Lenana (Ngong Road) to Kikuyu are encouraged to use Waiyaki Way, accessible through Naivasha Road or James Gichuru Road.

Traffic from Waiyaki Way to Mombasa Road will be rerouted through Karen Road to Lang’ata Road. However, trailers and lorries will remain on Waiyaki Way.

“We wish to inform the public that the Southern Bypass will be temporarily closed from Saturday at 11 PM until Sunday at 1 PM for the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon. We urge motorists to cooperate with traffic authorities and use alternative routes during this period to minimize inconvenience," Road Traffic Safety Superintendent Benard Otieno said during a press briefing.

The marathon will see runners in various categories, with the 42km full marathon starting at 6:00 a.m., the 21km wheelchair race at 5:45 AM, and the 5km race beginning at 10:00 AM.

The race will conclude at Uhuru Gardens for most categories, with the Family Fun Run wrapping up on the Southern Bypass.

Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Peter Gitau, promised a seamless event.

"Our race technical director, supported by dedicated route marshals and strategically placed CCTV cameras, will oversee the entire course, ensuring a world-class marathon experience,” he said.

Participants are also vying for a substantial prize pool of Sh12.9 million, with the top winner in the 42km full marathon set to receive Sh2 million.

The kit collection is ongoing at Uhuru Gardens and will continue until October 26, 2024.

Motorists are urged to plan accordingly as Nairobi gears up for this prestigious marathon event, ensuring minimal inconvenience and maximum safety for both participants and the public.
