A section of Kenyans has taken to social media to demand the release of activist Boniface Mwangi who was abducted Sunday morning by unknown people.

His wife Njeri Mwangi confirmed the incident.

According to Njeri, the outspoken activist was picked up by unknown people on Sunday morning at around 7: 15 am.

"This morning at around 7.15, six uninformed people went to courage base and forcefully took my husband from the house. I have no idea who, why or where they have taken him," she shared on X.

The news sparked uproar among Kenyans who shifted the blame to the government decrying the rising cases of abduction.

In an apparent reference to Mwangi's abduction, Former Law Society of Kenya President Eric Theuri decried the use of police in instilling fear and denying citizens their right to an opinion.

He said the continued cases of abduction will occasion public anger that would in the long run degenerate into anarchy.

"Abductions and the use of police to stifle opinions will only create more rebellion. Ultimately, a day will come when fear will be gone," he said.

"A revolution will be born. The use of illegal unconstitutional methods will only lead to anarchy. For the sake of the country, we should stop this dangerous trend."

CNN Journalist Larry Madowo also weighed on the matter saying the cases of abductions have continued to impact activists and prominent critics despite denials by the government.

Under the hashtag FreeBonifaceMwangi, thousands of Kenyans raised their voice against the abduction even as they called for his release.

"A Kenyan activist has been abducted by unknown people. #FreeBonifaceMwangi," Larry Madowo tweeted.

Investigative Journalist John Alla Namu also raised his voice against the abduction tweeting: " This needs to stop. #FreeBonifaceMwangi".

Non-governmental organisations also condemned the abduction.

Social Justice Centres Working Group while condemning the abduction stated:

"We strongly condemn the abduction of Boniface Mwangi by state agents. A steadfast human rights advocate, Mwangi was set to attend today’s Standard Chat Marathon. This unlawful detention shows a disturbing disregard for freedom of expression. #FreeBonifaceMwangi."

The Defenders Coalition on its part described the abduction as a grave violation of human rights adding that the incident cannot be tolerated.
