National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has been appointed to serve on the advisory panel of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL).
Wetang'ula broke the news in a statement he shared on his official X account on Sunday morning.
Speaking about the news of his selection to CoSPAL, Wetang'ula said he was honoured to have been appointed to serve in the prestigious role.
''Formed in 2020, CoSPAL’s mission is to unify Africa’s legislative leaders to confront shared challenges across the continent,'' Wetang'ula shared on his X account.
Wetang'ula was represented at the conference by Ugenya MP David Ochieng, who is a member of the speaker's panel.
"I was represented by Ugenya MP Hon. David Ochieng’ who expressed my commitment to serve with diligence,'' Wetang'ula said.
CoSPAL was established as a platform to facilitate increased deliberation, collaboration, and cooperation between Speakers and Presidents of Parliaments and National Assemblies across Africa.
It focuses on addressing common challenges, devising joint strategies, and mobilising collective action to advance Africa’s development.
The first General Assembly of CoSPAL was held in May 2022 in Abuja, under the leadership of the then Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Femi Gbajabiamila.
The Parliament of Ghana played host to the 2nd General Assembly of the CoSPAL, which started on Friday and runs until Sunday.
The event brought together about 120 participants including 15 Speakers and Presidents of National Legislatures, 30 Deputy Speakers and Presidents, Clerks and supporting staff of Parliaments.
Earlier, Ochieng’ said he was in Accra to represent Wetang'ula at the crucial conference to address the shared challenges facing Africa as a continent.
“The 2nd General Assembly of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) is underway in Accra. Honoured to represent the N.A Speaker, Rt Hon (Dr.) Moses Wetangula at the event that seeks to address the shared challenges facing our continent,” Ocheing said on his X account.
