Rejected prisoner collapses, dies at Huruma station

Trial murder incident report

A convict who was rejected by the prison authorities collapsed and died in police custody at the Huruma police station, in Nairobi.

Tom Odiada had been convicted of being in possession of alcoholic drinks at the Makadara law courts.

This was after he allegedly pleaded guilty to the charges. He was fined Sh20,000 failure to which he would face a three months jail term.

He was on Monday, October 4 escorted to Industrial Area Prisons and Remand Allocation but authorities there rejected him saying he was too weak and sickly.

Police returned him to Huruma police station where he collapsed the following day.

He was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police authorities said they had informed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority for action.

IPOA is supposed to investigate such incidents.

Elsewhere in Kasemeni Trading Center, Kwale County, one Dzame Chitieke, 37 collapsed and died after he had complained of chest pain.

The incident happened on Monday, police said.

The cause of the death is yet to be known, police said adding the body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

In Lodwar, Turkana County, one Lokuniye Amejem, 32 was found dead on the roadside.

Police said the victim was found lying dead with no visible injury.

The body was moved to the Lodwar morgue awaiting autopsy.

The cause of his death is yet to be established, police said adding investigations had been launched.

In Suneka, Kisii County, one Paul Obegi, 36 was found dead in his house in Nyankware village.

Police officers who visited the scene established that the deceased lived alone in his house.

 The body had no visible injuries and was moved to Nyangena Private Hospital morgue for preservation awaiting autopsy

Cases of sudden deaths have been on the rise amid investigations to determine the causes.

Police say up to three cases are at times separately reported daily which is alarming.
