A section of UDA members now want former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to sever ties with the ruling party.

In a statement, the chairperson of the UDA Founding Members Association Joe Khalende said Gachagua was properly impeached and therefore should disentangle from the party and sever any other political ties with it forthwith.

He however pointed out that the DP has a right to legal recourse in courts.

Khalende commended Parliamentarians for exercising their constitutional duties by successfully impeaching the then Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

“Over 80 per cent of the representatives of the people in both the National Assembly and Senate made a sound verdict that the former Deputy President did not merit holding public office on the grounds of the 11 charges, five of which were upheld by the trial Chamber,” he said.

Khalende urged the National Steering Committee and National Executive Committee to urgently convene and initiate the process of summarily expelling Gachagua from the party.

He called on the party's leadership to nominate Deputy President Kithure Kindiki as the deputy party leader.

“Additionally, the Party's top decision-making organ can consider an earlier proposal to create another position of deputy party leader in the spirit of broad-based democracy,” he said.

Khalende further said the party should initiate disciplinary action against Members of Parliament who voted against Gachagua’s ouster Motion.

He said the party's top brass should commence a radical purge in the House Committees.

“The excision must weed out saboteurs who are bent on sabotaging the agenda of President William Ruto and jeopardising the spirit of unity as exemplified by Raila Odinga,” he said.

He also urged the party to conclude the staff audit and the procurement processes under the chaotic stint of former Secretary General Cleophas Malalah

Khalende added that the party should conclude grassroots elections and appoint substantive officebearers.

“The secretariat should begin a robust programme to popularise the party and vigorously supplement the implementation of the Bottom Up Economic Agenda using its vast grassroots structures,” he added.
