Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called for the prosecution of police officers linked to the deaths and abductions of Kenyans during anti-government protests.

Kalonzo said extra-judicial killing is illegal in Kenya and maintained that officers linked to the deaths of protestors should face the law.

“We want to see two or three police officers arrested and charged with killing Gen Zs,” Kalonzo maintained.

He said it is absurd for Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to claim youth who went missing during the protests could still be hiding from the police to avoid being arrested.

“Many were arrested against the law and a number are still to be accounted for. It is absurd for the IG to say they are hiding because they are afraid of being arrested. It has been a long time, can these people still be hiding yet they know their rights? We must be told where they are,” Kalonzo insisted.

Kalonzo made the remarks in Vihiga County during the burial of Baba Mwalimu Eliud Josiah Marende, who was the father of former Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende.

Oparanya was among the guests who attended the burial. Others were DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, Jubilee secretary general Jeremiah Kioni, Vihiga senator Godfrey Osotsi, Luanda MP Dick Maungu, Kakamega deputy governor Ayub Savula and former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu.

The National Police Service (NPS) revealed that it has recorded 57 abduction cases since the youth-led demonstrations began on June 18, 2024.

Appearing before the Committee on Administration and Internal Security, Kanja dismissed reports of police abducting and killing Kenyans who were linked to the protests.

The IG stated that out of the 57 cases; 22 have since been found alive, 29 are still missing while six were found dead.

"I've made it clear, police don't abduct or kidnap, we detain and keep inside stations whereby investigations commence. Those found to meet the threshold of being taken to the court are arraigned while those who don't are set free," Kanja said.

Kanja termed the reports of police abductions from social media as 'propaganda', noting that the officers diligently carried out their duties.

He said cases of activist Morara Kebaso, journalist Macharia Gaitho and politician Jimi Wanjigi were sensationalised.
