Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has cautioned Kenyans who recently interviewed for Qatari state jobs against falling prey to conmen.

In an update on Sunday, November 10, 2024, on his X handle, the CS stated that successful candidates will be notified through phone calls and not SMS.

“Successful candidates from the Qatar interviews will be notified by phone call, not SMS. Appointment letters will be available for collection only at KICC,” he said.

Mutua issued this directive following a viral text message purporting to invite recent candidates to personally present themselves and sign their Qatari job offer letters.

The CS flagged the text message as a fake and urged the public to be on the lookout for potential scammers who want to prey on innocent Kenyans stating the relevant authorities are pursuing the people behind the fake text message.

“Security agencies are actively pursuing the authors and publishers of the above and other similar misleading and false information intended to scam unsuspecting Kenyans,” he added.

This alert serves as a reminder to the public to stay aware and rely only on official communication from the government and its affiliates so as to avoid falling victim to scams targeting hopeful job applicants.

Mutua’s sentiments come weeks after thousands of Kenyans turned up for Qatari state job interviews at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) and Kabete National Polytechnic.

The recruitment drive was part of the initiative to create expanded employment opportunities for Kenyans in fields like healthcare, ICT, education and construction.

The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between Kenya and Qatar aims to increase Kenyan workers from the current 67,000 workers to between 200, 000 and 300,000 workers.

The move aligns with Ruto’s broader strategy to stimulate the Kenyan economy through diaspora remittance and international job opportunities.
