The National Police Service has reassured Kenyans that security has been heightened in all parts of the country following concerns raised by Catholic bishops over safety situation.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said further appeal to the public to collaborate with officers by sharing any information that may aid in investigations.
“The National Police Service reiterates its commitment to serve and protect all persons in Kenya,” he said in a statement to newsrooms.
Catholic bishops said they are appalled by the blatant recurring incidents of reported abductions, disappearances, torture and killings of Kenyans.
“We also decry the increasing murder of women. This has caused great consternation, anger and disgust. Many families are still grappling with the loss of their children who were brutally killed, injured, or went missing following what is referred to as "GenZ demonstrations" in June 2024,” they said in a statement signed by Most Rev Maurice Muhatia, the chair of Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Responding to the bishops, Kanja said the demonstrations witnessed in the country from June 18 to July 2024 against the proposed Finance Bill 2024, resulted in massive losses ranging from death to destruction of property and livelihoods.
“NPS recorded 495 injuries to police officers, 347 injuries to civilians, 42 civilian fatalities, and 69 cases of serious damage to government vehicles,” he said.
“In addition, there were 57 reported cases of missing persons, of which 22 were found alive, 6 found dead while 29 are still unaccounted for and serious efforts by police are underway to trace them. During the protests, NPS made 1,552 arrests countrywide.”
In response to the current prevalent murder of women witnessed in the country, Kanja said NPS has recorded 97 deaths in the past three months.
“In most of the cases reported, we have effectively investigated, identified the culprits and arraigned them before court,” he stated.
He noted that a specialised Missing Persons Unit has also been established at the DCI to deal with cases of the nature.
“Gender Desks at police stations nationwide are on high alert to deal swiftly with any cases of gender-based violence,” he stated.
