The petitioner wants MPs to compel President William Ruto to declare femicide and gender-based violence a national disaster owing to the rise in cases in recent times.

This comes after the country witnessed an increasing number of Gender Violence against Women and Femicides related deaths.

" That the National Assembly should swiftly and Experditiously address the surging cases of Femicides and Gender-based violence in Kenya in accordance with article 119 which encapsulates that every person has the right to petition in Parliament to consider the matter with its authority," read Manyara's petition in part.

He urged the National Assembly to move in and compel the President to urgently act on the matter.

" The National Assembly is implored to urgently call upon the President to officially declare the surging cases a National disaster because the declaration will underscore the severity of the crisis and also formally recognize the gravity of this crisis and initiate the mobilisation of the requisite resources," he added.

Manyara's petition was received by the clerk of the National Assembly on November 15.

Manyara said in his petition the Kenyan constitution stipulates that any Law including Customary Law that is consistence with the constitution is void to the extent that inconsistency and any act or omission in contravention of the constitution is invalid.

The KUSO President reiterated that every person must respect, uphold and defend the Constitution.

He also emphasized the need to promote human dignity, equity, social justice, inclusiveness, equality human rights and non-discrimination and protection of the marginalized.

In early November,  President William Ruto called on security agencies in the country to combat the worrying trend of femicide in the country.

Ruto expressed concern that women and girls in the country have been losing their lives after being killed in cold blood.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat admitted that there has been a sharp rise in cases of murder and manslaughter as he called for concerted efforts to end it.
