MPs will to travel by Standard Gauge Railway to Mombasa for the 14th East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games scheduled for December 6-17, 2024.

The decision to travel to the coastal city by rail in part of cost-cutting measures put in place by Parliament.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula on Tuesday ordered SGR bookings for all MPs, himself included.

However, it was not clear if MPs will get tickets for the premium class coaches.

Adults pay about Sh12,000 for a premium class ticket for a one way trip and Sh20,000 for a return ticket. Children aged 3 to 11 will be charged around Sh6,100 for a one way trip.

The government has been implementing a raft of measures to cut down on expenditure.

In June, the government announced it would cut down on various costs, including; dissolving at least 47 state corporations with overlapping functions.

The government also scrapped budgetary provisions for confidential budgets in various Executive offices among other measures.

While the austerity measures are meant to reduce public expenditure, questions have been raised about what the consequent effect will be on wananchi.

The 14th East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games will feature an unprecedented participation of nine EAC Member States, including Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and newcomer Somalia, alongside host nation Kenya.

The multi-discipline sporting event will encompass football, netball, volleyball, basketball, athletics, tug of war, darts, and golf.

Kenya Ports Authority's Mbaraki Stadium will serve as the primary venue for football and athletics events.

Aga Khan Academy has been designated to host basketball, volleyball, netball, and darts competitions, while also providing training facilities for football and tug of war teams.

Other grounds that will be used as training ground for football are Uwanja wa Mbuzi/ Hassan Joho stadium, Sheikh Zayed Academy and ASK showground in Kingowea.

Kenya Ports Authority's Makupa Members Club will host the competition and also serve as a training field for basketballers.
