Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie has finally graduated with a master’s degree, 11 years after he enrolled for the programme at Daystar University.
Kiarie described his enrolment for a Masters degree as masomo uzeeni (education in old age), stating that it was a long journey owing to his busy schedule
“Arduous process it has been, but the product is truly worth it. Requisite studies, completed. Coursework, aced. Proposal, made. Proposal defense, successful. Research, undertaken. Thesis successfully defended and published,” he stated.
Kiarie graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Development Communications on November 15.
His thesis explored "The Influence of Artificial Intelligence on The Preservation of Oral Culture and Traditional Knowledge in Kenya".
Explaining why it took him so long, the Dagoretti South MP named various factors that slowed him down.
“A lot of interests competing for your time, resource and attention! Started out in 2013… the campaigns came and then the duties… then Covid 19 pandemic… and I still wanted to do something decent. Not just any other mundane project,” he stated.
“Glad that I have finished in a good place. The research was a ground breaking one in some ways,” he added.
Kiarie said he ventured into some uncharted waters, noting that the course had variables spanning different disciplines; technology, philosophy and anthropology.
Kiarie chairs the Communication, Information, and Innovation (CII) Committee of the National Assembly. He is also a member of parliamentary committee on Education.
He listed Lenana School Primary, the first public primary school in Ngando ward, in Dagoretti South as one of his milestones.
Lenana School Primary was conceived following a tragic incident at a private school in the ward in 2019.
Residents of Ng'ando ward encountered a tragedy that robbed the community of eight children on September 23, 2019. A classroom at Precious Talent School collapsed killing the pupils and causing injuries to 64 others.
Responding to the urgent need for safe and accessible educational facilities, Kiarie fast-tracked the establishment of the new school which was opened in June, 2024.
