Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua
has announced 600 job openings for motorcycle riders in the United Arab
Emirates (UAE).
Mutua through his social media platform X on Thursday said it is a recruitment drive by a UAE-based company seeking to hire Kenyan riders.
According to the statement by Mutua, those interested in the jobs will have to meet various eligibility and application requirements.
The CS stated that interested applicants must hold a valid Kenyan passport or proof of an eCitizen application in progress.
The applicants must also possess a current Certificate of Good Conduct or proof of an eCitizen application in progress, and have a valid rider’s license.
Mutua revealed that the positions do not require prior experience though it is an advantage.
"Experience is not mandatory but is an added advantage. Bodaboda riders are highly encouraged to apply," Mutua said.
"Successful candidates will undergo four months of training in Dubai, during which the company will assist them in obtaining UAE riding licenses," he said.
Job Details and Benefits
According to Mutua, successful applicants will earn 7.5 dirhams (Sh264) per delivery trip, with a minimum of 15 trips per day translating to a monthly income of approximately 2,925 dirhams (Sh104,000) tax-free.
He also stated that ambitious riders delivering over 30 orders daily can significantly increase their earnings.
Additional perks offered by the UAE-based company include free accommodation, company-provided and maintained motorcycles, comprehensive medical care and a fully sponsored UAE work visa.
However, Mutua revealed that applicants are required to cover pre-arrival costs totaling to Sh167,900.
"The company does not cover pre-arrival costs, which must be borne by the employee," Mutua said.
Interested candidates will have to cough up to Sh81,400 for HR provider fees, Sh40,000 for airfare, Sh16,500 for medicals and Sh30,000 for processing fees.
“Banks are aligned to offer loans to cover these costs, allowing employees to repay once they begin working in Dubai. The medical fee is paid first, and the remaining costs can be settled after passing the medicals. This ensures no unnecessary losses,” Mutua said.
The recruitment drive will include interviews in Nairobi on December 9, 10 and 11 at Kamukunji TVC next to Kamukunji Primary, from 8 am to 5 pm.
In Malindi, the interviews will be held on December 13 and 14, 2024, at Kilifi North TVC, Watamu Town, next to Watamu Primary, from 8 am to 5 pm.
The Ministry of Labour has assured ethical recruitment practices, with officials present during interviews.
