Police warned on Thursday of possible traffic chaos on parts of Thika Road following a planned graduation event at Kenya Medical
Training College (KMTC).
The event will be conducted at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Nairobi on December 5.
All KMTC colleges
have sent their graduands to the ceremony and police said they expect more than
10,000 students and up to or more than 40,000 people in the area.
This is likely to strain some services including roads near the area.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei said they have deployed more police officers to the area to help manage the situation.
He said they, among others, also expect muggers, pickpockets, thieves and other suspects in the area.
“We urge motorists to also follow instructions from police officers on the ground. We have increased the number of personnel covering the area in general as a precaution for the smooth running of the event,” he said.
He said those attending the event started to arrive at 3 am indicating what to expect.
“We anticipate thousands of people will celebrate the event. We are ready for it.”
He asked motorists using parts of Thika Road, especially near the Kasarani area to seek alternative routes.
This is due to the high volume of vehicles that are expected at the event.
Some of the drivers, he said, are new in the area and will be difficult for them to manoeuvre to and out of the same.
“If you can avoid the area, it is good for you as a motorist. We have deployed more traffic marshals to help in the management of the flow,” he said.
This will be the 93rd graduation event for the college with a theme of Fit-For-Purpose Health Workforce.
The college is one of the leading institutions producing health workforce in the country and region.
