President William Ruto on Tuesday hosted MPs from Raila Odinga’s Nyanza backyard for a meeting at State House.

The Star has established that the well-attended meeting, which started at 7pm, went late into the night.

The meeting was cloaked in secrecy with not a single picture being released by State House, as has always been the norm.

MPs were quietly mobilised; those participating in the ongoing games in Mombasa took the next flight to Nairobi, signalling the importance of the deliberations.

The lawmakers first met at National Assembly’s leader Junet Mohammed’s office in Parliament before leaving in a long convoy to State House.

MPs who attended the meeting said it was all about follow-up of some of the development projects the President had promised the region.

“The meeting went late into the night, we were just following up on the projects we requested during his last tour of in Kisumu,” a second-term MP who attended the meeting said.

Some of the roads the President said would be constructed include the Muhoroni–Mamboleo and of Awasi-Katito roads.

The leaders asked for the consideration of the multi-billion Koru-Soin dam during the Kisumu State Lodge meeting in August. Other projects presented during the Kisumu meeting included the completion of the Kisian-Usenge-Osieko road, tarmacking of the Odongo-Uhanya road and Bondo-Liahanda road.

This was the first time the head of state was hosting MPs from the region at the State House since the formation of the broad-based government that roped in members from the opposition.

In his reconstituted Cabinet, Ruto appointed former legislators John Mbadi to head the country’s purse while Opiyo Wandayi was named to the influential Energy and Petroleum docket.

Others appointed to the Cabinet are Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives), Hassan Joho (Mining) and Beatrice Askul (East Africa Community). Both Mbadi and Wandayi were present.
