  • "We had some few challenges and that is why we could not finish as anticipated," KURA's, Resident Engineer Kenneth Mbogori said.
  • "The construction is ongoing, we are now remaining with only 14 kilometers and if all goes well we hope to finish it next year," he added.

The long-awaited 70km Ngong-Suswa road, a crucial project for decongesting the northern corridor, is finally nearing completion.

According to the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), 88 percent of the work has been done.

The Sh4 billion road, launched in June 2018, was initially expected to take 42 months to complete.

It, however, stalled in 2020 after the contractor left site due to lack of funding.

KURA's, Resident Engineer Kenneth Mbogori said they are optimistic the road will be fully operational by early 2025.

"We had some few challenges and that is why we could not finish as anticipated. The construction is ongoing, we are now remaining with only 14 kilometers and if all goes well we hope to finish it next year," said Mbogori.

This critical infrastructure project is expected to play a significant role in alleviating congestion on the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu road, one of the busiest highways in the country.

Once completed, it will act as an alternative route for travelers heading to Narok, Bomet, Nyamira, Kisii, Kericho and other parts of Nyanza.

The road is among the key projects prioritised by President William Ruto for completion as part of his commitment to improving transport infrastructure in the country.

Its completion is also set to stimulate economic activities and improving trade in the region.

Despite the earlier delays, the progress made over the past few years has been promising.

When he appeared in parliamentary early this year, then Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said they had allocated Sh600 million in this budget for the road.

Kajiado West MP George Sunkuiya recently visited the site to inspected the works.

Speaking in a part event, Sunkuiya urged the government to complete so that it can help boost both livestock trade and agribusiness.

"This would be a cheap alternative route to Narok from Mai Mahiu road. The economy in this region had begun growing before the road stalled," he said.

Kajiado North MP Onesmus Ngongoyo on his part stated "its completion would spur the much-needed growth in Ngong town and its environs."
