President William Ruto has led leaders in mourning National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula's mother.
Mama Anne Nanyama Wetang'ula, who is also the mother of Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi died on Friday.
"Our condolences to Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Mheshimiwa Timothy Wanyonyi for the loss of your dear mother," Ruto said in a post on X.
"Anne Nanyama was a progressive, responsible and caring woman who raised upright children.
May God grant comfort to the family, friends and the people of Bungoma at this sad time.
Rest in Peace, Mayi Nanyama."
Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka also eulogised the late family matriarch as a "remarkable community mobiliser and mentor."
"Her compassion, wisdom, and selfless deeds positively transformed countless lives. During this profoundly difficult time, may her family and loved ones find comfort and strength in the cherished memories of her remarkable life and the enduring love she leaves behind,” said Lusaka.
Lusaka sent his condolence messages to Wanyonyi and Wetang'ula.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi mourned Mama Nanyama saying her death had plunged the Parliament of Kenya and indeed, the entire country into deep mourning.
"In her demise, Khukhu leaves behind an indelible mark in our society as the matriarch of the family that has given this country great leaders, and a mentor to many who lived, interacted and walked with her through life,'' he said.
"I send my deepest condolences to my brother Rt Hon Wetang’ula, Hon Wanyonyi and their entire family for this deep loss. I pray that God grants them the fortitude and grace to bear Khukhu’s departure from our midst. May her soul rest in eternal peace."
Kanduyi MP John Makali conveyed his condolences to the family stating that the late Mama Anna had a strong moral foundation that produced two leaders in the country.
"Speaker Moses Wetangula, Timothy Wanyonyi MP Westlands, and the entire Wetang’ula family, I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of your beloved mother, Khukhu Anne Nanyama Wetang’ula. The strong moral foundation she instilled in her family has produced leaders who continue to serve our country with distinction. I share in your grief during this difficult time, ” Makali said.
Wetang'ula was appointed Speaker of the National Assembly in 2022.
He served as the Minister for Trade until he was elected Bungoma Senator in 2013.
The Ford-Kenya Party leader was then re-elected in 2017 and 2022 but resigned to take up the speaker position.
His brother, Timothy Wanyonyi, was first elected as Westlands MP in 2017 and defended his seat in 2022.
He has talked about plans to vie for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2027.
