President William Ruto Friday arrived in Bungoma County for the burial of the mother to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula and Westlands MP Timothy Wanyonyi.
Mother Anne Nanyama Wetang'ula died on December 21.
Born on the 9th of March, 1930, into the Babuya clan from Sirare Village, Mama Nanyama died after a long illness.
Ruto was accompanied by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
He was received by Speaker Wetang'ula and his family.
Senate Speaker Amason Kingi and Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli are also in attendance.
Several MPs led by Majority Leader Kimani nIchung'wah and Minority Leader Junet Mohamed were also present.
Governors and Members of the Senate are other dignitaries who were present.
While announcing her death, Speaker Wetang'ula mourned his mother as a firm and committed person to any cause that she undertook.
“I would like to convey my deepest gratitude to everyone who has condoled our family following the passing of our matriarch Mama Anne Nanyama Wetang'ula which occurred after a long illness,” Wetang'ula said in a statement on X.
The Speaker added that his mother was a strict disciplinarian and passionate advocate for education.
“Mama Anne was also a devout Catholic and an active member of the Catholic Women’s Association and the Legion of Mary. Known for her culinary skills, she was an expert in preparing traditional kienyeji meals, a craft she happily passed on to anyone eager to learn.”
As a teacher by profession, Wetang'ula said that his mother instilled in her family the virtues of respect, honesty and trust.
“She was also a dedicated farmer and a passionate advocate for equity. May her soul Rest in Eternal Peace.”
Westlands Member of Parliament mourned his mother as a mentor who was full of wisdom.
"After a prolonged period of illness, Mama peacefully rested, bringing to an end a remarkable life defined by love, sacrifice, and unwavering faith," Wanyonyi said.
"Mayi Anne was more than a mother to me - she was a mentor, a source of strength, and a guiding light. Her wisdom, kindness, and prayers sustained me through every season of life. Her legacy of compassion and humility will forever remain with me," he added.
He asked for prayers during this difficult time.
