National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has convened a special sitting next week with the main business being to consider a report on the vetting of three new cabinet secretaries.
The trio-Mutahi Kagwe, Lee Kinyanjui and William Kabogo- have been nominated by President William Ruto to head Agriculture, Trade and ICT ministries respectively.
Their nomination is contained in a press release dated December 19, 2024. They are all scheduled to appear before the Committee on Appointments Tuesday next week a day before the sitting.
In a notice dated January 8, Wetang’ula stated that his decision to recall the MPs follows a request made by the National Assembly’s Leader of majority Kimani Ichung’wah.
“Now therefore, it is hereby notified to all members of the National Assembly and the general public that Thursday, 16th January 2025 has been appointed as a day for special sittings of the National Assembly,” reads the notice.
The sittings will be held in the morning and afternoon.
During the sitting, the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations is also set to table its report for debate on the vetting of High Commissioners, Ambassadors, Permanent Representative and Consul-General.
Former ICT CS Margaret Nyambura and her former Agriculture counterpart have been nominated as ambassadors to Ghana and Brazil respectively.
They are set to be appear for vetting on January 10 alongside ex-sports CS Ababu Namwamba who has been named Kenya’s Permanent Representative to UNEP/UNON and Noor Gabow as Consul-General to Haiti.
Wetangu’ula is also expected to convey any messages from the executive or the Senate during the sitting.
The lawmakers will also consider the report from the Committee on Labour on vetting of Mary Kimonye as new Public Service Commission vice chairperson position and seven other nominees.
They scheduled to appear for grilling January 9.
Also to be considered during the sitting are the nominees for appointment as chairperson and members of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
Other main businesses to be transacted according to the Speaker are priority bills and the mediated version of the County Governments Additional Allocations Bill (Senate Bill No. 19 of 2024).
This is, however, subject to the conclusion of the mediation process.
