KCSE: 61,465 candidates from subcounty schools got direct entry to university

Results released by CS Ogamba show that a total of 9 candidates posted a straight A.

Sub County schools produced 61,465 candidates with direct entry to the university during the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams.

Results released by Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba show that a total of 9 candidates from subcounty schools posted straight A.

Sub County schools are the majority in the country and are mainly day schools with some operating boarding sections.

The results indicate that 302 candidates scored an A minus 1,901 and scored a mean grade of B plus and 8,105 candidates posted Grade B plain.

The results show that 19,410 students scored a mean grade of B minus while 31,738 candidates posted a mean grade of C plus.

The cut-off for direct entry to university is a C plus. This means that all the candidates who scored C plus and above will get entry to public and private universities.

According to the results released on Thursday, 47,384 candidates who sat the examinations were aged 22 years and above.

This was a decline from the 54,995 candidates who sat for the 2023 KCSE aged 22 years and above.

Some 68,670 candidates who sat the tests in 2024 were aged 21 years while 143,807 were 20 years.

The candidates who were aged 19 years were 229,097.

A total of 353,154 candidates who sat the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education exams scored a mean grade of D plain and below.

The number represents nearly a third of the 958,928 candidates whose results were released on Thursday.

This number of students may not enrol for formal education training, but will now join technical institutions for artisan courses.

The number of grade D plain and below, however, reduced from 369, 311 that were recorded in 2023 KCSE.

In the 2024 KCSE, a total of 153,334b scored a mean grade of D Plain of which 79,832 were girls while 73,501 were boys.

A total of 151,487 candidates posted a mean grade of D minus in the 2024 KCSE of which 72,181 were girls while 79,306 were boys.

Some 48,333 candidates scored a mean grade of E of which 20,112 girls against 28,221.

Comparatively, in the 2023 KSCE results, 48,174 candidates posted a mean grade of E of which 19,960 were girls while 28,214 were boys.

An analysis by KNEC on how each category of schools performed shows that there were only 161 E grades in National schools while Extra County had 115 E grades.
