President William Ruto’s daughter Charlene Ruto has urged the youth to embrace agriculture as a gainful economic activity that will help to transform the country.

Charlene said farming is both fan and lucrative and that young Kenyans should venture into, with passion to reap the benefits.

Charlene who is the patron of the Smachs Foundation says they have teamed up with several patents to push for a youth-led agriculture renaissance in the country.

She spoke during the launch of a model smart agriculture farm at Kosachei Primary School in Uasin Gishu which is aimed at training young children at the school to engage in farming for the benefit of the school and the community

“When children plant crops and watch them grow, when they harvest and enjoy the fruits of their labour when they sell their produce and see how it supports their schools and families, they no longer need convincing to embrace farming”, she said.

She said training young people in schools would eventually have a multiplier effect in building a community of young farmers in the country.

“Our dream of sparking a youth-led agriculture renaissance will have been achieved,” she said adding that they planned to have similar model farms for smart agriculture in all counties.

Charlene said with the effects of climate change on food security, water systems and livelihoods, training young people in smart agriculture will put them at the forefront of mitigation and offering solutions.

She said through the project the youth would be able to ask relevant questions about how they can engage in smart farming in order to adapt to changing weather patterns and still produce more for food and commercial purposes.

The foundation donated school bags to the 4K club children engaging in smart farming activities at the Kosachei model farm.

The project has already been initiated in several counties including Samburu and Elgeyo Marakwet.

She said the model farms in schools are used as both centres of learning and for food production.

The children grow a variety of crops, especially vegetables and due to changing weather patterns they will apply drip irrigation to ensure the farms are used round the year
