President William Ruto has urged students to take advantage of the government’s move to introduce a mid-year series of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) to improve their grades.

The examination targets candidates who wish to retake the KCSE, those who were unable to sit for the exam due to illness or other unforeseen circumstances.

It also includes adult candidates who may wish to register for the July KCSE series.

"This is an ideal opportunity for those who want to improve their qualifications. It's a second chance for our children to better the subjects they did not perform well," Ruto said.

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) announced the new series during the release of the 2024 KCSE results on January 9.

"I wish to remind the public that the last KCSE examination will be administered in 2027. Any person wishing to repeat fully or partially should take advantage of the remaining chances to do so," said CEO David Njeng'ere.

Speaking during the official opening of the Lenana School Primary tuition block in Ng'ando, Dagoretti South, Nairobi, Ruto said the government was keen on the development of education, saying it remains an equaliser for all Kenyans.

"We will educate, mentor, and support our children to exploit their talents so that they can productively contribute to the transformation of our country," he said.

The MPs praised President Ruto for embracing an affirmative action for Nairobi County schools, saying each constituency has been allocated Sh58 million for the construction of classrooms.

He said the government was building more than 3,500 new classrooms in Nairobi County to accommodate the increased enrollment of children in schools.

Each of the constituencies has been allocated Sh58 billion for the construction of new classrooms this financial year. An additional amount is set to be allocated in the next financial year, Ruto said.

Area MP John Kiarie thanked the President for the construction of the 24 new classrooms, saying a dream has been achieved after 40 years.

On Sunday, Ruto outlined his plans to transform Nairobi City into a world-class, thriving metropolis.

Top on his priority, he said, is to sort out Nairobi River, a project in the next two years.

His vision also includes enhancing infrastructure by upgrading key roads and expanding the city's housing sector.

He stated that the cleaning of the Nairobi River has so far employed 20,000 youths, adding that another 20,000 youths will be employed this year.

"Nairobi cannot be a city where there is garbage everywhere," he said.

"I have promised the people of the city, just give me this year (2025) and the coming year—the Nairobi River will be clean," he said.

He disclosed that before the end of this month they will finalise the award of the contract for the works, which include the construction of walkways among other key projects that will ensure the resource’s lost glory is restored.
