The family of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta is mourning the death of veteran rally driver Kibathi Muigai.
Kibathi, a first cousin to Uhuru, is said to have passed on last week at age 72.
“With sadness and acceptance of God’s will, we announce the passing on of Kibathi Muigai on January 10, 2025,” an announcement in one of the dailies reads in part.
No further details have, however, been provided about the cause of his death.
Kibathi, commonly known as Wa Ngina was also a prominent businessman from the larger Kenyatta family.
He was a brother to politicians Beth Mugo, Ngengi Muigai and Kungu Muigai.
Kungu is the patron of Kiama Kiama, a group that brings together elders from the Mt Kenya communities.
He currently serves as the chairperson of the Board of the Kenya Cultural Centre Council having been appointed in January 2023.
He is known to be a strong supporter of President William Ruto.
During his time as safari rally driver, Kibathi drove a Mitsubishi Colt Lancer with his navigator being Arshad Khan.
The Mitsubishi lancer was synonymous with Joginder Singh aka ‘Flying Sikh” who won the rally three times.
He is set to be laid to rest Friday at his Ichaweri home in Gatundu South.
According to the family, the cortege will leave the Lee funeral home in the morning with the funeral service set to be conducted the same day at the Nairobi chapel, Ngong Road.
He is survived by his wife Josephine Nduta and seven children.
