A robbery with violence suspect in Tharaka Nithi county on Friday attacked three police officers and seriously injured one on the hand.

The officers were on a mission to arrest the suspect, accompanied by an informer.

A police report indicated that the suspect waylaid the officers on the way and suddenly cut one of them on the left hand wrist and right hand palm occasioning him serious deep cuts.

“During the incident one officer discharged one round of ammunition from duma pistol and the attacker managed to escape to nearby bushes,” the police report said.

The officer was rushed to St Orsola Mission Hospital Materi for treatment and admitted in serious condition.

Thepolice report said the informer was arrested after initial investigations revealed that he was jointly involved with the robbery with violence incident at Kangeta with the run-away attacker.

An ignition motorcycle key and registration number plate were recovered from the informer.

Police said a man who was a neighbour and a friend to the informer stole the motorcycle in a robbery with violence incident at Kangeta area of Igembe Central subcounty within Meru county on December 25, 2024.

The attack happened before the officers and the informer reached where the suspect lives.

The attack happened on the same day a similar incident was witnessed in Narok where a police officer lost his hand during a confrontation with a group of protesters who turned violent along the Narok - Mai Mahiu road on Friday.

The attcker was part of a section of Narok residents who were demonstrating along the road to protest the death of 25 sheep allegedly knocked down by unknown motorist.

The group mobilised themselves and barricaded the road at around 11am demanding for the compensation of the killed sheep.

Police who were deployed to restore normalcy were met with continuous screams and refusal by the residents to unblock the road.

The officers were forced to fire 10 rounds of blank bullets in the air and 10 tear gas canisters toward the group to disperse the crowd and allow free flow of traffic.

In the process, several officers were injured and one officer’s arm was cut off.

Some officers also lost their firearms, police said in a report.
