President William Ruto on Tuesday led a host of leaders in connecting power to various homes in the Shinyalu constituency as part of his government's last-mile connectivity programme.
The Head of State was accompanied by DP Kithure Kindiki, Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang'ula, Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa and area MP Fred Ikana among other senior leaders.
Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) chairman Godfrey Lemiso and CEO Dr.Rose Mkalama were also present.
During his address, Ruto promised the residents of Kakamega County that 35,000 new households would be connected to electricity within the next year.
Speaking in Lukhumbi village, Shinyalu constituency, when he commissioned the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Electrification project, Ruto said that the government has set aside 2.8 billion shillings to make the project a success.
Ruto said that he was determined to ensure that every Kenyan is empowered to carry out their small businesses through access to electricity.
The Lukhumbi project which was commissioned Tuesday saw 93 households connected to electricity.
Among the lucky residents was Mama Rose Andover, a 50-year-old widow with 8 children.
She said that the electricity will be instrumental in helping her children and grandchildren study better in the evening in order to have a brighter future.
