This week began with activities ranging from political, social and international events.

The week saw President William Ruto spend six days in the Western Region for a development tour.

This is even as the United States President Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States following a series of events across Washington DC.

As this happened, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hosted Mt Kenya leaders at his Karen Home in Nairobi.

Ruto’s six-day tour in Western

President William Ruto concluded his six-day development tour of the Western region on Friday, January 24.

The President's tour began with the launch of the first-ever sugarcane farmers' bonus at the Mumias Sugar company on Monday.

The Head of State issued Sh150 million in bonuses to the farmers as part of the Kenya Kwanza administration's initiative to revitalise the sugar industry.

He was accompanied by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki among other leaders.

Fire in part of Isiolo

Fire engulfed part of Isiolo and destroyed thousands of acres and livelihoods for thousands of pastoralists.

The Chief Conservator of Forests Alex Lemarkoko and Isiolo Senator Adan Dullo flew over the affected area to assess the damage caused.

"We have been able to see today large and diverse fires that have happened in particularly Savanah area. The fire is affecting grassland and shrubland along the Ewaso Nyiro Basin," Lemarkoko said shortly after surveying the area.

Lemerkoko said the entire area is estimated to be between 300,000 to 400,000 hectares, adding that 60 per cent has been consumed by fire.

Kindiki hosts Mt Kenya leaders


Deputy President Kithure Kindiki hosts a section of MPs from the Mt Kenya region at his official Karen residence /DPCS



Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Thursday hosted several leaders from the Mt Kenya region.

The meeting held at his official residence in Karen was to assess progress made in the implementation of development programmes in their constituencies.

The leaders discussed the completion of ongoing infrastructural development projects such as roads, last-mile electricity connections, water reticulation, markets, county aggregation and industrial parks in the region.

China launches satellite

 

A satellite group is launched aboard a modified Long March-6 carrier rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China's  Shanxi Province, Jan. 23, 2025 / ZHENG TAOTAO/XINHUA  


China sent a new satellite group into space from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China's Shanxi Province.

This group of 18 satellites, which is the sixth batch that will constitute the Spacesail Constellation, was launched at 1:15 p.m. (Beijing Time) aboard a modified Long March-6 carrier rocket and entered its preset orbit successfully.

The launch marks the 557th flight mission of the Long March carrier rocket series.

Developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, the rocket was fueled with liquid oxygen and kerosene propellant, which is non-toxic and pollution-free. It has a carrying capacity of 6.5 tonnes for a 500-km sun-synchronous orbit.

County stalls demolished

Several stalls demolished along Spring Valley Road, Nairobi on January 23/2025


Several stalls along Spring Valley Road were demolished leaving aspiring tenants in shock.

The stalls, which were branded Nairobi City County, were yet to be occupied and the paint was still fresh.

A witness explained that the shops were demolished around 2 am, the same time he received a call about the incident

Nairobi County Director of Communication Wangui Maina said they had started an inquiry to determine who was behind the demolition.
