Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli has defended his close engagement with the government, saying it is part of his mandate to address the issues affecting workers.
In a statement, he said many concerns have been solved through social dialogue with various stakeholders, including the government.
“Cotu is committed to advancing the rights and welfare of workers, and this is achieved through social dialogue, a cornerstone of tripartism as defined by the international Labour Organisation,” Atwoli said.
The workers’ defender also disputed reports that his close working relationship has everything to do with political survival, having supported Azimio la Umoja in the last general election.
“Social dialogue requires engagement with the government of the day to ensure that labour issues are addressed,” the Cotu boss said.
“This does not equate to political survival or partisanship but rather a pragmatic approach to secure workers’ interests.
“Our many achievements, including the negotiation of better wages, promotion of workers’ rights and influencing labour policies are testament to this commitment.”
Atwoli has been the target of anti-government critics, who accuse him of betraying the workers, accusations the Cotu boss has denied He has also been vocal in responding to Ruto’s critics while showing support to the government’s policies and programmes.
The renewed focus on his ties to Ruto come after the President visited Atwoli at his rural home in Khwisero, Kakamega county last week.
The head of state, who was accompanied by other senior government officials, was received by Atwoli and his family members.
The Cotu boss posted on X that this followed the President’s “successful and impactful” development tour of Western Kenya.
“Thank you, your Excellency, for visiting and sharing a meal with us,” he said.
