Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja now says 3,500 members of the Green Army will going forward take their clean-up exercise to various residential areas in the city.
The Green Army on Sunday braved evening downpours to complete the collective cleanup of Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) and prepare to extend their efforts to the residential areas.
While addressing the gathering on Sunday, Sakaja assured the team that the cleanup exercise would not stop any time soon.
He said the plan was to shift the focus from the CBD to neighbourhoods across the city in a coordinated effort to clean up the areas and bring order in Nairobi.
“This is the last day we are collectively, as 3,500 members, participating in the CBD clean-up. Over the past weeks, you’ve done an exceptional job. We will now move to the estates, cleaning them one by one,” the Governor said.
Sakaja revealed that plans are underway to employ the 3,500 Green Army members on a permanent and pensionable basis under the county government.
At the same time, he stressed that this would depend on infrastructure and systems being put in place.
“You’ve done a commendable job. Plans are in motion to ensure your employment becomes permanent and pensionable. But you also need to do your part as we do ours. Employment will be based on merit and the hard work each of you puts in,” Sakaja assured.
The Governor also outlined plans to establish the Green Nairobi Company this year.
The company will operate autonomously and oversee garbage collection, environmental management, and city-related tasks.
“Cleanliness is our collective responsibility,” Sakaja said.
“Let’s all participate, not only in cleaning but also in maintaining a clean Nairobi.”
Joined by close to 40 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), the Governor pledged to work collaboratively to restore order and cleanliness in the capital.
He emphasized that maintaining a clean city is a shared duty, calling on residents to participate actively. Also present were the Deputy Governor and CECs.
The Governor commended the Green Army for their dedication saying President William Ruto had taken note of their efforts.
“The President has expressed his pride in what you’re doing. Let’s push harder and deliver for our people,” Sakaja said.
The Green Army, established under the Green Nairobi Department, has been the force behind the cleaning of the Nairobi CBD in recent weeks.
