A suspect was arrested and 80 bales of bhang recovered from him along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

Police said this happened Monday during an intelligence-led operation by detectives from the Anti-narcotics Unit, along with colleagues from Lari police station.

During the operation, the hawk-eyed officers intercepted a vehicle that was being driven by the suspect during which a search revealed a cache of drugs hidden in a concealed compartment.

The suspect and the motor vehicle were escorted to DCI headquarters where a thorough search was conducted resulting in the recovery of 80 bales of dry green plant material suspected to be narcotic drugs concealed in a false compartment of the motor vehicle.

The narcotics are usually laced with other chemicals to make them effective and stronger before being sealed at the border and later transported to various markets in particular Nairobi and Mombasa.

Police say they have intensified their operations to tame the trend even as the traffickers keep changing their routes.

Elsewhere, a collaborative effort by detectives from the Anti-narcotics Unit, along with their colleagues from the Operations Directorate led to two arrests and the seizure of narcotic drugs in the Kimbo area of Kiambu County.

During the operations in the Backstreet area, the detectives first raided a residence, recovering dried green plant material, multiple rolls of cannabis, weed cookies stored in clear buckets, a digital weighing scale, and an electric oven used for baking cookies. The individual residing in the house managed to escape arrest

In the second location, which also functions as a shop, detectives apprehended two suspects and seized several packaged rolls of cannabis sativa and items believed to be proceeds of the illicit trade in drugs.

Police have mounted an operations targeting the business seizing dozens of bales valued at millions of shillings.

Officials say an increase in the use of shashamane is a major challenge in fighting substance abuse.

The drug is boiled in a pot and smoked like shisha, or rolled into joints.

Some addicts mix the drug with mustard seed oil and cannabis before rolling it in joints.

The smoke can affect people as far as four meters away.
