Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin have appeared in court in line with a court order requiring them to do so.
The two were required to appear in court to explain the whereabouts of three people who are still missing after they were allegedly abducted in Mlolongo.
The men were abducted on December 16. The three are Justus Mutumwa, Martin Mwau and Karani Muema.
Kanja told Justice Chacha Mwita that the report of the missing persons was made at the Mlolongo and Athi River police stations.
"When that report was made I directed the director of DCI to commence probe and leading investigator Paul Wachira who is an assistant IG is here before the court to give a progress report on the status of the investigations," he said.
Kanja reiterated that he is a law-abiding citizen who respects courts and orders issued at any given time.
"I confirm that we have none of the men in our custody. But I want to assure Kenyans that they are safe," he said.
DCI Mohamed Amin took the witness stand and said investigations into the missing persons case are still ongoing.
He said at the appropriate time, the file will be forwarded to the ODPP complete with their findings and recommendations.
"I also wish to state that the missing persons are not under the custody of the national police service. We have not arrested them and they are not under our custody," said Amin.
In closing, Amin said under the current circumstances they can neither produce their bodies nor can they prefer any charges.
