The IEBC selection panel will on Saturday invite applications from Kenyans for chairperson and members of the electoral commission.
The chairperson of the IEBC selection panel Nelson
Makanda encouraged qualified Kenyans to send in their applications.
Makanda said Kenyans can rely on the media to get updates on the process.
“The panel will continuously issue updates to the country on the progress of this exercise,” he stated.
The IEBC Act provides that the selection panel shall, within seven days of its appointment, invite applications from qualified persons and publish the names of all applicants and their qualifications in the gazette, two newspapers of national circulation and on the website of the Parliamentary Service Commission.
The IEBC is now on track to become fully constituted within the next three months.
It follows the swearing-in of the Selection Panel on Monday tasked with recruiting new IEBC commissioners.
The absence of commissioners over the past two years has created a constitutional breach, delaying by-elections and review constituency boundaries.
The panel has 90 days to appoint new commissioners.
"The selection panel shall finalise the recruitment within 90 days of its appointment and forward the names of the nominees to the President and shall thereafter stand dissolved," the IEBC Act reads.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act, Cap. 7C provides for the composition of the Selection Panel comprising of nine members
Members include two persons nominated by the Parliamentary Service Commission, representing the majority party or coalition of parties and the minority party or coalition of parties; three persons nominated by the Political Parties Liaison Committee, one person nominated by the Law Society of Kenya; one person nominated by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya; and two persons nominated by the Inter-religious Council of Kenya.
On January 27, 2025, by Gazette Notice No. 715, President
William Ruto appointed the members of the Selection Panel.
On the same day, members of the Selection Panel took and subscribed to the oath or affirmation of office before Chief Justice Martha Koome as prescribed under the Third Schedule of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act.
