The new Moi University council has made radical changes to the management of the university sending its vice-chancellor Professor Isaac Sanga Kosgey on eight-month leave.

In the changes announced by the new Moi University Council chairperson Professor Noah Midamba, Professor Kiplagat Kotut will replace Kosgey in the interim.

Kotut has been tapped from Embu University where he has been serving as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration.

The far-reaching changes were announced by Midamba on Saturday in the company of Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala.

Moi University Deputy Vice Chancellor of Academic Research and Extension and Students Affairs Isaac Njuguna Kimengi has also been sent on a one-year sabbatical leave.

Kimengi will be replaced by Professor Khaemba Ongeti who has been serving as the Dean of Students at Moi University.

Also sent on a one-year sabbatical leave is Professor Eng. Kirimi H. Kiriamiti, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of Administration, Planning, and Strategy.

The chief Finance and Legal Officers have also been sent on compulsory leave.

Announcing the changes on Saturday, Midamba said the new university leadership was appointed after a thorough process.

“Interviews were done and the following scholars with impeccable credentials and experiences were identified to lead Moi University in the interim,’’ Professor Midamba announced.

“The appointments were effective from Friday 31, January 2025.”

Midamba was appointed new council chairperson by Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Migos Ogamba, in January 2025 for three years.

Kotut is expected to steady the cash-strapped university and return it to its days of glory after years of trouble.

While on a recent tour of the North Rift, President William Ruto promised that the financial and management challenges facing Moi University will soon be a thing of the past.

The President said he has set up a committee to assess the scale of the issues facing the institution and recommend solutions.

"We will put in place an efficient management team and allocate enough resources so that Moi University can thrive like the other public universities," he said.

Ruto was speaking after opening the Ngeria Technical Training Institute in Kapseret Constituency, Uasin Gishu county, on his second day of a development tour of the county.
