The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned musician Millicent Jerotich Kipkorir, alias Marakwet Daughter, over her latest song.
In a letter to Kipkorir, the commission alleged that lyrics of the song were likely to cause incitement.
NCIC asked the musician to appear before the commission on February 5, 2025, to aid in investigations into the matter.
The commission indicated that it was investigating the words used in her song.
It said the lyrics are “likely to incite hostility and affect harmonious coexistence between different ethnic communities in Kenya, contrary to Section 13(1)(a) and Section 62 of the National Cohesion and Integration Act."
Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi, reacting to the news, asked the NCIC to “leave Marakwet Daughter alone.”
“I've got a list of about 50 names that would be a much better use of your time. This lady has a chance, ya kueleweka, achaneni naye,” he said.
Marakwet Daughter gained fame last year over her popular song, 'Mali Safi Chito,' but changed tact and turned political.
The musician joins a long list of prominent individuals who have been summoned recently by NCIC over alleged disparaging remarks on the government as well as the ongoing abductions.
Last week, the commission summoned MPs Dan Wanyama (Webuye West), and Mwago Amos Maina (Starehe), over statements they issued, which it said were likely to incite hostility and undermine national unity.
The commission said the statements are likely to threaten the peaceful coexistence of Kenyans, particularly along political and ethnic lines.
Wanyama is under investigation for remarks he made during an interdenominational prayer event at Cheptais Boys' High School in Bungoma County on January 19, 2025.
Mwago is being investigated for comments made at a public forum.
