The government is implementing development projects in Garissa County that represent a strategic investment of approximately Sh1.06 billion.
The initiatives are being implemented by the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development.
The ministry said construction has commenced on both projects, with the housing project showing significant progress in foundation and structural works, while the market project has begun its initial construction phase.
“These developments showcase strong collaboration between national and county governments, with particular emphasis on integrating local Jua Kali artisans and MSMEs into the formal economy,” the ministry said in a statement.
The Garissa Township Affordable Housing Project is an investment of Sh1.01 billion, located along Kismayu Road, it has a capacity of 408 housing units.
The Mikono ESP Market is an investment of Sh47.9 million, located in Garissa Town, next to Garissa Bus Stage, with a capacity of 204 traders.
The ministry said the developments are designed as comprehensive urban centers that integrate contemporary amenities while respecting local cultural and architectural preferences.
“The Garissa Township Affordable Housing Project presents a thoughtfully planned residential community with a diverse mix of housing options," the ministry said.
"The development includes 192 social units ranging from studio apartments to three-room units, 144 affordable housing units comprising two and three-bedroom options, and 72 market-rate units, creating a balanced and inclusive community."
The ministry further said the Mikono ESP Market represents a modern approach to traditional commerce, featuring dedicated trading spaces supported by essential facilities.
It noted that the market's design prioritises trader and customer needs through the incorporation of modern amenities including a mother's lactation room, cold storage facilities, and a food court.
“The integration of digital infrastructure through an ICT hub and modern payment systems positions the market as a bridge between traditional commerce and digital trade,” the ministry added.
It said the developments represent a significant investment in Garissa's economic infrastructure, with far-reaching benefits for the local community.
The ministry said the Affordable Housing Project will generate approximately 300 daily construction jobs, while the Mikono ESP Market will employ 100 workers during its construction phase.
“Together, these projects will inject over Sh850 million into the local economy through wages, material procurement, and associated services.”
