Police in Eldoret are investigating an incident in which a cancer patient who went missing from a hospital in Eldoret was found mauled by dogs.
Uasin Gishu police boss Benjamin Mwanthi said the 53-year-old male patient who was suffering from throat cancer had been admitted to the hospital but went missing on January 21, 2025
The hospital and his family reported to the police that the patient had gone missing leading to police launching a search operation.
Mwanzi said the body of the patient, which was mauled by dogs, was later found in a bushy area near a river which passes near the hospital.
The police boss says the patient was identified to be a resident and police are still investigating what transpired.
“DCI officers are still investigating the incident but the patient was identified and his family is aware," said Mwanthi.
Police say the patient before leaving the hospital during the night removed hospital garments, put on his clothes and walked away.
Mwanthi said the case was being handled by DCI officers and that the body had been taken to a morgue in the area.
The body was found with many parts having been eaten by the stray dogs and it was also decomposing almost in skeleton form.
Police found the body at a location almost a kilometre away from the ward where the patient had been admitted.
It is not clear how the patient exited from the backside of the hospital and why the hospital security personnel did not detect the patient as he walked out.
”We have recorded statements at the hospital to establish what happened and if there was any negligence,” said Mwanthi
After the body was found, his family was called to the scene before police took it to the morgue.
