Immediate former MCA for Metkei ward Lawi Kibire has been elected the third speaker of the Elgeyo Marakwet county assembly.

His election followed the resignation of former speaker Philemon Sabulei who was last month appointed to serve in the ministry of interior.

Kibire who two weeks ago resigned as MCA garnered 28 votes which were enough to beat Eldoret-based lawyer Michael Chepkok who garnered one vote.

One vote was spoilt while one MCA was absent during the elections at the county assembly in Iten town.

Elgeyo Marakwet county assembly clerk Jane Mutai presided over the exercise that saw Kibire sworn in immediately.

“I am grateful for the honour bestowed on me to serve as speaker," said Kibire.

Sabulei resigned from his position at the assembly after serving for seven years.

“I have already tendered my resignation letter which takes effect from January 30th," he said.

Sabulei was also serving as chairman of the County Assemblies Forum where he will also relinquish his position.

The forum brings together all speakers and leaders of the majority at the county assemblies.

Sabulei has congratulated Kibire for being elected as his successor.

“I worked with Kibire when he served as MCA and I have trust in his ability to lead the assembly,” said Sabulei.

Sabulei who spoke to the Star on the phone said he was also grateful to the people of Elgeyo Marakwet, MCAs and other leaders for supporting him while he served as a speaker.

He had served as speaker during the previous regime and was elected after the last general elections.

Sabulei said he had worked well with MCAs at the assembly and achieved a lot in terms of oversight and legislation in the county.

He said he believed speaker Kibire would lead the assembly to continue discharging its mandate effectively.
