National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula on Tuesday met the University of Nairobi Chancellor Patrick V. Verkooijen.

The Speaker and Chancellor met at his office in Parliament.

According to Wetang'ula, he was keen on understanding the measures being taken to restore the university's lost glory.

“As an alumnus, I was keen to understand the measures he is taking to restore the university to its former glory, especially at a time when many public universities are grappling with financial and management challenges that have affected the quality of education,” Wetang’ula said.

Wetang’ula stated that the Chancellor articulated his vision for the university’s future as a leading global centre for higher learning.

“Prof Verkooijen, who became the Chancellor in September last year, outlined his ambitious Big 5 Plan, which has been endorsed by both the University Council and the Cabinet. His goal is to reposition the university as a global leader in higher education," he said.

“His plan includes the establishment of an Innovation Hub at Chiromo Campus, the launch of a School of Artificial Intelligence to harness the economic potential of AI through the Math Department, and the creation of a School of Leadership through the construction of the Obama Leadership Institute to nurture future leaders.”

To address the financial issues, Wetang'ula said, the university plans to leverage its assets to generate revenue and reduce overreliance on government funding.

“I assured the University management of my support for any initiative aimed at revitalizing the institution and committed to addressing a town hall meeting with students in the coming months," he said.
