The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has maintained that Kenya Kwanza is the Majority party in the National Assembly.
Secretary General Hassan Omar explained that the High Court, in its judgment on the leadership of the House, never declared that Azimio is the majority party in the National Assembly.
“For the avoidance of doubt and contrary to falsehoods circulating through various media platforms, the High Court never declared the Azimio Coalition as the majority party or Kenya Kwanza as the minority party,” Omar said.
In a statement to newsrooms, Omar added that compliance with the High Court judgment requires that determination of the majority and minority leadership be strictly based on official information provided by the Registrar of Political Parties.
“Based on the foregoing High Court decision, the Kenya Kwanza Coalition with a total of 165 members is lawfully the Majority Coalition, while the Azimio Coalition with a total of 154 members is the Minority Party within the meaning of Article 108 of the Constitution,” he said.
Omar said publicly available information held by the Registrar of Political Parties confirm that Kenya Kwanza has a total of 165 members while Azimio has 154 as at February 11, 2025.
“UDA remains committed to the essential values of democracy, social justice, and the rule of law,” he added.
Omar noted that at the heart of the dispute was the question on the approach to determination of the Majority and Minority Leadership of the National Assembly.
“Upon consideration, the High Court concluded that the communication made by the Speaker Moses Wetang’ula October 6, 2022, was not based on information provided by the Registrar of Political Parties, and therefore proceeded to quash the aforesaid decision,” he said.
He further noted that the petitioners had sought several orders including a declaration, to be issued to declare that the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition is the majority party in the National Assembly of Kenya based on the outcome of the election of members of the National Assembly held on August 9, 2022
“They also sought a declaration be issued to declare that the Kenya Kwanza alliance is the minority party in the National Assembly. However, the High Court categorically declined to grant the orders.”
