Visa appoints Michael Berner as Head of Southern and East Africa

Before joining Visa, he was a Managing Director and Member of the Executive Board at Citibank Russia.

Visa has announced in a statement that Michael Berner will assume the role of Head of Southern and East Africa (SEA).

Visa, which is a multinational corporation that provides electronic transfer of funds globally, said Berner will now oversee Visa operations in 24 markets across the Southern and East Africa regions.

He will also report to Visa's Regional President of Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa (CEMEA), Andrew Torre.

''We are delighted to have Michael take on the new role,'' Andrew Torre said.

''Visa has been present in Southern and Eastern Africa for more than 40 years, and we are pleased to have Michael's expertise to advance our plans, working closely with clients and partners.''

Michael on his part expressed his commitment to work with stakeholders adding that the opportunity pledging to bring more digital benefits to more consumers.

''I am thrilled to lead Visa's Southern and Eastern Africa team and look forward to working with our partners, financial institutions and governments to introduce new innovations, accelerate financial inclusions and enable the ecosystem,'' he said.

He will be based at Johannesburg in South Africa.

Berner has previously held roles in the corporation including having served as a Senior Vice President Head of Merchant Sales and Acquiring, at CEMEA. 

He joined the company in 2019 as Country Manager.

Before joining Visa, he was a Managing Director and Member of the Executive Board at Citibank Russia.

While in Russia, he graduated from Moscow Automobile and Road Institute (MADI) with a Masters degree in financial management.

Other postgraduate programs he completed were based at Columbia Business School, the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard University.
