Detectives are hunting for gunmen who attacked a senior police officer and robbed him of his pistol in Limuru, Kiambu County.

The inspector of police based at Limuru police station said he was on his way to Ngarariga police station in a private car when he was attacked by three gunmen on Sunday.

He was to visit the station for inspection and on reaching the Njira Njeru area near Kwa Rufus shopping center, he was accosted by three unknown men who were on board a motorcycle of unknown registration number and armed with an AK47 rifle.

He said the men blocked him at gunpoint and ordered him to surrender.

He said in confusion, his car veered off the road and landed in a ditch as the gang followed him there.

They ordered him out of the car at gunpoint and robbed him of his firearm which was loaded with 15 rounds of live ammunition and sped off.

During the incident, the officer escaped unhurt, police said.

A hunt is ongoing on the gang, police said. Police suspect the gang had trailed the officer before striking.

Such weapons are at times used to commit crimes. Police said they are pursuing leads on the attack to recover the weapon.

Meanwhile, a police officer was arrested over the theft of livestock in Githunguri, Kiambu County.

A local in the Matimbei area reported that his freshian cow was reported missing within Thakwa village.

Police officers visited the scene, recovered the freshian cow, and arrested one suspect who stated that he had bought the said cow through M-pesa at a cost of Sh79,000 from a police officer attached to Ngewa police station.

It was established the officer was then a deserter, as he had not reported to work for weeks. It is not clear why he had deserted work.

He was later traced within Githunguri Township driving a salon car.

He led his colleagues to his rented homestead located in the Kiangima area, where a total of 13 cows and four calves were found.

Police said they are waiting for identification from locals who have complained their cows were missing.
