Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC) to help establish and develop Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism in the County.

The partnership is the formulation of a framework to establish a Business and convention Center and market development of MICE Tourism in the region.

Governor Bii noted the potential opportunities for Meetings, Incentives travel Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) in Uasin Gishu County and the North Rift Economic Block (NOREB).

He said the county stands to gain from MICE considering its potential to become a major sports tourism hub.

"This partnership will open more MICE opportunities for the county and stimulate economic growth in the region with the KICC's expertise and resources and of mutual benefit to Uasin Gishu and Kenyans," Governor Bii said.

KICC CEO James Mwaura said the agreement aims to attract national and international events especially sports tourism conventions, creating job opportunities, stimulating local businesses, and boosting the region’s visibility.

He noted that professional Conference Organisers prefer taking Conferences where there is practical experience hence the opportunity for the county and KICC to bid for sports tourism events.

"This agreement marks a significant step forward for the county’s economic growth, as it leverages KICC's expertise to position Uasin Gishu as a prime destination for business tourism through enhanced MICE infrastructure," he said.

In July 2024, KICC hosted the signing into law of the IEBC (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

The event marked the first time in Kenya's history that a bill was signed into law outside the State House.

KICC boss Mwaura said the signing of the Bill at their premises symbolised a moment of unity and reconciliation for the nation.

KICC's historical significance dates back to its inauguration by Kenya's first president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta in 1973.

It has hosted numerous landmark events, positioning itself as an iconic symbol of Kenya's self-rule and ambition.

With its distinctive cylindrical tower and extensive facilities, KICC is a premier conference centre in Africa.

Among the significant events the KICC has hosted include the 59th African Development Bank Group Annual Meetings in May, attended by over ten African presidents.

The Centre also played host to the inaugural Africa Climate Summit (ACS) in September 2023.
