Vintage cars have always held a certain allure, a promise of speed, status, and unparalleled comfort.
“Ivory is a 1973-year W115 model, Mercedes Benz 230-4. It is a petrol engine, Four Cylinder, Carburetor injected engine with a 2.3-litre displacement," he said.
Stan was inspired by his father, who also collected classic cars, to make this particular purchase.

“My Dad once had a Mercedes 380 SEL. Saw it and I loved old Mercedes ever since. When the opportunity came to purchase this car, through a friend, I could not let it pass. I am a young but old soul at the same time," Stan said during an interview with the Star.
“When I’m driving her through bumpy roads, navigation is easy and comfortable compared to most recent vehicles," he said.

According to Stan, aside from Ivory’s classic appeal, the car is bound to appreciate in value over time, making it a potentially good investment.
However, Ivory being a recent purchase, he has not considered selling it.
While exploring the inside of the Mercedes Benz 230-4, he pointed out a few features found in the centre of the console, such as a cigarette compartment.
“Most automobiles had cigarette ash-trays at the front and the back of the car," he said.
He complimented the tyres’ reliability as they do not require frequent change or added pressure.
"The 1973 Mercedes was built with a focus on quality and longevity. They were built to withstand the test of time,” he said.
All automobiles have their drawbacks, but for Stan, the attention it draws from fellow car owners and pedestrians is what can be overwhelming.
He said that he also finds it difficult to give it to other drivers as it is unique in its complexities.
“Well; she (Ivory) gets excessive attention, which is good and bad at the same time. Fidelity and exclusivity of knowing the car and how to drive it sometimes makes it difficult for me to entrust anyone else with it," Stan said.
The owner’s favourite thing about Ivory is its distinctiveness.
“The car is one of a kind, especially in Kenya. I have been a Mercedes Benz lover and collector for a few years. The steering wheel, amazing comfortability, reliability and the fun factor of belonging with other collectors and drivers," he said.
He explained that the name Ivory originated from the build of the steering wheel.
“I name all my cars. This one is particularly named Ivory as the steering wheel replicates the look of Ivory-if, not Ivory in itself. However, what followed was the ban of Ivory trade in 1989,” he said.
Stan said automobiles are often expensive to maintain, however, in this case, it is one of the most inexpensive luxury purchases.
“It is not at all expensive. It only needs water and oil. I often advise people who have old cars that leak oil, that it is a positive indicator that it has oil- to leak," he said.
Classic cars have propelled the introduction and growth of car events and clubs in Nairobi and according to Stan, he always looks forward to participating in them and showcasing Ivory.
“Yes, I religiously attend Concours de Elegance every year. One of my cars has participated previously in the event," he said.

He is also part of a classic car club in Nairobi.
“Locally, I am part of a Classic Mercedes Group which groups people with cars introduced from 1953-1976," Stan said.
Owning a classic car has financial props to it. Stan revealed that he capitalizes on Ivory by distributing it for shoots, advertisements, weddings and even local music videos; a financial magnet.
“Although I initially acquired the vehicle for recreational use, I have since received overwhelming interest for use of the vehicle for commercial purposes being; music videos from top artists in Kenya, weddings and photo shoots amongst others," Stan said.
He advocates for classic car owners stating that his experience is rewarding and beyond incredible.
“Owning a classic car is a really amazing experience. From the people you get to meet to the driving experience… it takes you back in time with the comfort of the future,” he said.
The 1973 Mercedes Benz 230-4 is a classic today, tomorrow and forever.
Stan's story is a testament that the collection of vintage cars is a shared passion that has encouraged community, not just in Nairobi but globally.
