Kenya Kwanza leaders have led the nation in mourning the late former IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati as a man who conducted past elections with integrity.
National
Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah mourned Chebukati, describing him as “a guardian of free and fair
elections.”
Chebukati, who chaired the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from 2017 to 2023, died on February 20, 2025.
Ichung’wah praised Chebukati’s unwavering dedication to upholding the integrity of Kenya’s democracy, particularly during critical electoral moments.
“His
conduct remains a testament to his steadfast leadership and commitment to
justice,” he said.
“As a guardian of free and fair elections, Chebukati exemplified courage, impartiality, and an unyielding respect for the will of the people,” Ichung’wah added.
“His service transcended duty; it was a profound contribution to the stability and progress of our nation. To his family, friends, and colleagues, our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
In his message of condolence, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi—who is also mourning the loss of his father, Mzee Kingi—described Chebukati as a diligent and competent leader.
He commended Chebukati’s handling of the 2022 general election, in which President William Ruto was declared the winner against former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“Chebukati
oversaw fair and transparent elections that have continued to promote the rule
of law and good governance in Kenya. May his soul rest in peace,” Kingi wrote
in a post on X.
Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also paid tribute, describing Chebukati as a principled leader with courage and a strong commitment to the Constitution.
“A true patriot and a man of immense integrity, Chebukati professionally steered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through two elections,” Murkomen said on X.
“My thoughts are with his family, friends, the legal fraternity, and the nation at large during this difficult time of profound loss.”
