Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed sorrow following the passing of Wafula Chebukati, the former Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Gachagua in his tribute on X described Chebukati as a distinguished lawyer, a devoted family man, and a committed public servant who played a crucial role in Kenya’s democratic processes, particularly during election periods.
"His demise has robbed his family a great father, Kenya, a leader; he will dearly be missed. My deepest sympathies to his family and his friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace," Gachagua said.
Chebukati died on Thursday, February 20, at 11pm.
The former IEBC boss had been admitted to a hospital in Nairobi where he had been undergoing treatment for nearly a week.
He had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital. What Chebukati was ailing from remains private.
Chebukati served as IEBC chair for a full term of six years and retired in January 17, 2023.
Several leaders have sent messages of condolence to the family of Chebukati.
President William Ruto in mourning Chebukati, said his death is a great loss to the country.
The President described Chebukati as a principled leader who served the nation with integrity.
“I have received the news of the passing of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati with profound sorrow. Chebukati was a principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity. His death is a great loss to our country.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time. Rest In Peace,” Ruto said.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula described Chebukati as an advocate of great repute, who embodied the dignity and integrity of the legal profession.
He further described the former IEBC boss as an eminent jurist, steadfast defender of the rule of law, and dedicated public servant whose contributions to the nation’s democratic journey will be remembered for generations.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has described Chebukati as a man of integrity and conviction, adding that he dedicated his life to upholding democracy, serving the nation with diligence and an unwavering sense of duty.
