President William Ruto is now calling on leaders to always be patriotic by prioritising the interests of the country.

Speaking at the funeral of Baringo Senator William Cheptumo, Ruto said that while they can agree to disagree on other issues, they must not compromise on the greater good of Kenya.

He insisted that the country belongs to all Kenyans and what one is or what a person believes in does not matter.

The President said we all share a country and its success is the success of all and its failures affect all.

“I agree with the leaders who've spoken here that we need to think about our country. We need to be patriotic about Kenya. We can disagree on policies, programs, on how to implement, but we should never disagree about the destiny of Kenya, this is our country and it doesn't matter who you are or what you believe in," Ruto said.

“We share a country and a destiny. If Kenya succeeds, we all succeed. If Kenya fails, none of us will succeed."

He warned that all must rethink the ‘don’t care’ attitude as it affects the entire country.

He urged leaders, both from the church and the political class, to stand up and see to it that this stop.

“As a society, we must rethink what is going on in our society. The belligerents don't care, everything goes attitude, we must rethink it. We may think it will affect others, but soon it will catch up with us as a nation. Unless we stand up to this as leaders, both religious leaders and political leaders like ourselves, and be measured in what we do.”

The head of state further urged leaders to always find common ground, especially when it is matters affecting the country’s wellbeing.

He insisted that divergent views should not stop Kenya from moving forward.

“I want to persuade us as leaders, that we can find common ground on important matters that are good for Kenya, and we can work together to pursue those things even as we have divergent views or opinions on whatever it is that we do.”
